It is clear to see that the Internet of Things is going to make a huge impact on the job market in the coming years. The massive surge in productivity and competition between businesses is probably the best thing that has happened in the careers of many Sales and Engineering employees.

But what is IoT really? And how exactly is all the technology impacting the job market?

A quick Google search will tell you that “The Internet of things (IoT) is the inter-networking of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as "connected devices" and "smart devices"), buildings, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity which enable these objects to collect and exchange data.”

The growth of connected things is massive. It has been estimated that by 2020 there will be around 50 billion smart connected products around the world, talking to each other and collecting data.

But what does this mean for the job market?

Most of the big names in IT are currently developing IoT products and services, along with many smaller companies and startups. Smart homes, smart cars, smart cities, robotics, the list goes on. Gartner predicts there are already more than 5 billion connected devices around the globe today, all creating data which needs to be processed and analysed.

The capability of many existing employees to do this is in many cases limited, and companies are now identifying the need for fresh new talent with IoT expertise to assess their needs and respond to them. Teams are being created within businesses to drive this change in direction, teams with a solid understanding of the connection between technology, manufacturing and services.

As the IoT continues to grow in the coming years, it is clear that the number of jobs required to develop the new marketplace will explode. Current estimates say that around the globe there are less than half a million developers that are contributing to IoT. Over the next 5 years that figure is estimated to rise to over 4.5 million.

There are going to be roles created by the IoT that have never existed before, jobs being created at an unprecedented level.
